Your Apartment

Welcome to MORE INFO about CABANAS. We will be delighted to hear from you should you wish to rent our apartment, but hope this site will also be of interest to anyone visiting this part of Portugal.

Although Cabanas still has some of the quiet charm of its fishing-village origins (Londoners might think of Leigh-on-Sea in the sunshine) it has numerous restaurants and inummerable bars and cafés within walking distance and nightclubs and floor-shows and casinos within a short drive. As a holiday resort, with wonderful beaches, it is very quiet in winter if a little hectic in late July and August. With a large local population, not all fishermen (or fishwives?), there is a supermarket or two, all the shops you'd expect in a small town, several friendly hardware stores for the widgets you need, cash machines and telephones at walking intervals, banks, ice-cream parlours and at least one internet café to keep up with your emails from Auntie Flo.

Restaurants and cafés range from cheap and cheerful to more than expensive enough and, at least in summer, you can probably find one or two serving egg and chips or nut-roast as well as those (the inummerable ones) serving fish, fish or fish (and potatoes) - it is Portugal, and the fish is usually excellent, which is more than can usually be said for the 'batatas' (these boiled potatoes are edible however). The nearest McDonald's (I think) is a convenient 20 miles away (30km) in Olhau. (About the only other 'brand' store you might recognise locally is Lidl in Tavira).

Buses (choose Origin and Destination from this all-service page and click 'Procurar'), taxis and trains are all within 10-20 minutes walk and from the rail station at Conçeicão (1km) it is a short journey east to Vila Real do Santo Antonio and the ferry every 30 minutes to Ayamonte in Spain or west to Tavira and on to Faro, Lagos or even Lisbon.

You can walk, swim or paddle on either side of the lagoon (town-beach) but boats from the jetty just two minutes walk from the apartment leave for the island every few minutes. The crossing takes two minutes and the walk across the island to the Atlantic beaches a further 4 minutes. Then, if not swimming or sunbathing, you can walk for several miles east or west (the last to the entrance to the lagoon off Tavira).
